Sony 90mm macro vs batis 85mm12/12/2023 I am wondering which of these lenses would be better for portraits. I am thinking of getting the Sony A7R III / IV (Not decided yet), and would like to get one of the following lenses: Thank you and I hope you’re well and safe, as well. If I was not doing specific macro I would not buy a macro lens. If you need a macro lens get the 90 mm and you can use it as you like. I would say no one can tell you what you will like. If I need other FLs, I have lenses with my existing systems that covers some of the focal lengths, but with Sony body, I want a 85mm lens, specifically the Zeiss or the 90mm macro as the subject of the thread. I do not want a zoom lens, I want to stick with primes. I know I have more options, but I prefer the 85mm FL more over the other FLs. This has spanned both my time with Nikon and Sony I do agree the macro lens can double up but know the weakness of that type of lens. Remember the 3 things that affect DOF, focal length, aperture and camera to subject distanceĪ 70-200 mm 2.8 will be the most versatile if you have the min focus distance to work with. You can use a 70-200 zoom lens even a 70-300 zoom lens as a portrait lens.ĩ9% of the time much you are at a F stop of 5.6 - 11 anyway.īe sure to consider how you will light these things What varies is physical working distance with combination of lenses minimum focus distance and what you want the bokeh to look like ie blur the background For full length my preference is no wider than 35 mm with the range between 35 mm and 50 mm, so the Batis 40 mm is also in the running.įor a headshot that is chest and up and usually a focal length between 85 mm and 200 mm For some definitions.Ī portrait is waist level up or full length. AF can be a tad slower since it is not designed like the others.įorgetting the name of the manufacture. The macro is a good double duty lens but only if you do macro or i would not get that lens. For portraits you have many more options than the 85 mm focal length.
